CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Ali shoved Kristofâs arm from his shoulders where he kept insisting on draping it around him. His possessive and protective behavior had surprised Ali, and irritated him. Now Kristof seemed determined to treat him like some precious jewel while they walked back to the truck.
âShouldnât you tuck your scarf tighter, Mama⦠watch the ice, Mama⦠I think you should get some new boots cuz those donât look very safe, Mamaâ¦â
The last straw came as they were getting into the backseat of Luciusâ quad cab when Kristof literally lifted Ali off his feet and placed him into the truck. To make matters even worse, heâd leaned over and tried to buckle Aliâs seatbelt, as well. Ali rarely got upset with him, but enough was enough.
âKristof! I can do it up myself. Stop hovering. Go get in your side.â
âSometimes this seatbelt is hard do up, though.â
âI donât need your help!â
The words rang a little too loudly and far too harshly as they echoed inside the vehicle. Kristofâs face fell, he dropped his head, then walked away without a word. Unfortunately, he didnât step to the other side of the truck, but started hoofing it down the sidewalk like he intended on walking home in the snow.
âOh, for Goddessâ sake,â Ali moaned.
Manny had already taken his seat beside Ali, while Lucius and Nicu twisted their heads from the front to see what the fuss was all about. Ali shrugged, before fighting with the buckle on the seatbelt and climbing out of the truck. He took one step onto the icy parking lot with a little too much haste, and found himself flat on his back on the ground.
Firm but gentle hands grabbed Ali under the arms before hauling him to his feet. He leaned into the large body behind him but only until he had his footing straightened out. Given the hot prickles of electricity that sizzled through him he didnât even have to look to know it was Kalo.
âIâm fine, thank you,â he said as he twisted away from Kaloâs grip.
Ali cautiously turned to face him. His pulse quickened and his heart thrummed faster against his ribs. He reached around and brushed some snow from his backside, then looked up into concerned purple eyes.
âYou didnât hurt anything, did you?â Kalo asked. His gaze moved over Ali from head to toe as he checked him over. âThatâs a relief, since those boots are a little impractical on ice.â
âTheyâre not impractical at all.â Ali tapped one foot against the other, trying to rid his brown suede, three and a half-inch stacked heel, Ralph Lauren boots of any snow that would ruin them. âThey said winter boots when I ordered them.â
Kalo laughed and Aliâs heart did an extra flip. He wasnât sure if heâd ever get used to the weird tingling and fluttering he felt every time Kalo was around. It wasnât an altogether uncomfortable feelingâfelt pretty good if he was honest with himselfâbut getting accustomed to it wouldnât be necessary if Kalo would soon be flying his way back to his Romanian cabin in the woods.
