She paused at his words. Forgive him? Why would de Brye ask for forgiveness? The arms around her were not de Brye's. The stench of stale wine or ale did not assault her nostrils. When she looked up at the man holding her, the mist that had temporarily clouded time cleared from her vision.

What had she done?

Drained of emotion, and of the strength to stand, she sagged against him. Gerard, I am sorry.

You have no reason to be sorry.

But-

He cut off her words with a brief kiss. Now hush. He lifted her in his arms, walked over to a tree and sat down against it.

After settling her on his lap, he rested the back of his head against the tree and closed his eyes. Catheryn nestled into the cocoon made by his chest and arms.

The steady rise and fall of his chest and the warmth of his embrace lulled her into an easy peace that bordered on slumber.

She would have been content to stay like this forever. Never having to worry about another thing. Far too soon the clamor of horses approaching Brezden cruelly drew her from her wishful thoughts.

Gerard sighed wearily and opened his eyes. What now? He glanced toward the road and cursed at the armed party filing in through their gates.

Catheryn felt his heart leap and asked, Who is it?
