II. The Faculty

1. It is relatively easy to measure faculty competence in research; it is difficult to measure quality in teaching. I believe that more often than not the good teacher is a productive researcher, and vice versa. But perhaps we have placed too little emphasis on teaching in our faculty reviews. Methods of evaluation should be evolved and records of teaching accomplishment accumulated in personnel files similar to those regarding other faculty activities.

2. In my opinion, the teaching load of faculty in many areas of the University are on the average too low. This may be the University’s greatest area of extravagance. From my own experience I would say that a six hour teaching assignment for the faculty member who also has research duty is too light. In bygone days I taught two large classes (forty or more students each) every semester and in two of every three summer semesters while at the same time keeping office hours in an administrative post. At the same time I was able to maintain a consistent research program. While I would not recommend a return to such a Spartan schedule I believe almost any professor in an academic area should be able to teach three courses each semester.

3. Of course the University must remain competitive in faculty salaries and in fringe benefits. But still more needs to be done to attract superior faculty. As a dramatic move in this direction the University might launch a program for funds to endow a number of chairs.
