Chapter Twenty

It took about twenty minutes for everyone to get a token, and by the time it was done, I was right in that Kilo’s bag was the least popular.

There were some two hundred people in the room, and I smiled around, noting that Ashley had directed her friends to Kilo, meaning that they were here together now.

“Okay everyone!” I called out, gesturing for them to gather, even as Dante closed the door to get rid of the lookie-loos.

“So, this will be the first lesson, meaning that you get to be our experimental bunch. What we do here will hopefully go well, but if you don’t want to risk yourself in this group, the door is over there, no hard feelings.” I waited a minute, noting that nobody moved. “No? Well, you lot are brave.” I smiled.

“Okay, first lesson, and this might seem bloody stupid, but it’s important. You all have status screens, a collection of stats that tell you about who you are, and that hold information on you. Pull these up now, please.”

I gestured to Dante, who grinned, remembering the way he’d taught us all about this step before.

“Okay, everyone!” Dante called out, striding to the front and clapping his hands together and rubbing them in excitement. “You’re looking for your affinity system. If you pull up your personal ‘body’ stats, so your Agility and so on…has everyone got that? Right then…”

He proceeded to talk everyone through the pages, guiding them until everyone could see them, then he stepped to the side, surrendering the floor to me.

“SO!” I boomed out. “Many of you will have high affinities for one or more element or form of mana. Some might have none. Don’t worry about it. You will also have some particularly low ones most likely; these are important, so don’t ignore them. As a basic rule of thumb, if you have between one and a hundred, this is how naturally adept you are with that form of mana. If, like me, you have anything over a hundred? Please raise your hand.”

I waited and nodded after a few seconds. “Don’t worry, I would have been frankly astounded had you had anything that high. Mine was raised to it by my class, in part. Now, does anyone have any minus figures?”

Most of the room held their hands up. I nodded and smiled.

“Now these are things you are highly susceptible to, and I have them in the minuses too, so don’t worry. For example, has anyone got one of the primary elements in there? That’s Fire, Earth, Air, or Water, for those who don’t know.”

“Fire,” one woman called out, and I nodded to her.

“Thank you. Well, I highly recommend you avoid Dante’s classes then. Essentially, Fire will do you more than the usual amount of damage, so be careful with it!”

“I know.” She held up a scarred left hand that was clearly a long-term issue for her.

I frowned, then looked around the room, already spotting Jo striding toward her determinedly.

“Don’t worry,” I called, seeing her face when she saw Jo making a beeline for her.
