10: Miscellaneous Mysteries

(10 novels, 18 short stories)

As well as her thriller stories, Christie also wrote several mysteries that excluded her more famous detectives. These range in style from the PG Wodehouse antics of Why Didn't They Ask Evans (1934) to the brooding menace of Endless Night (1967) and cover some of her most popular – and most dramatised – stories.

1) The Sittaford Mystery (1931)

Case: A séance in a snowbound Dartmoor house leads to murder…

Context: This is the first time Christie touched on a supernatural theme in one of her novels. The fictional village of Sittaford is located on Bridestowe and Sourton Common, Dartmoor, close to her hometown of Torquay. (The real Sittaford Tor is situated five miles south-east.) Elements of the plot are similar to the later short story 'Three Blind Mice' (from the 1950 collection), the basis for the stage-play The Mousetrap (1952).

Conclusion: A confident, atmospheric mystery story with more than a hint of The Hound of the Baskervilles. 4/5
