Judge Rogers dropped the letter to the desk and opened the top right drawer, shuffling around until he found the green plastic bottle. Isabella’s words had reignited the sharp belly pains he knew to be an ulcer. His doctor had as much as told him that if he didn’t reduce his stress level, get some exercise, and eat healthier, he’d end up in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer or heart attack. “Your choice,” the doc had said.

Chewing four of the antacid tablets, he pulled out his legal pad and began writing. Twenty minutes later, after scratching out a few lines and adding a few others, he reread what he’d written, smiling sadly.

Although it was certainly too late to right his earlier wrongs, he’d make damn sure that the Thomas sisters knew he had read their heart-wrenching words, had truly listened to their pleas. He wished he could tell them what remarkable young women they were. Both of them. Perhaps he’d write them personal letters once the trial was over. In any event, he knew what he had to do tomorrow.
