BUCK PARKED on Magazine Street again, this time across the street a little over a block down, but still with a clear view of the real estate office. Heâd followed these idiots all over the city. But he was full of hope. When heâd seen the Mercedes pull over and stop with Eagan hanging out of the window, heâd known what house they were looking at. When they continued on, so did he, but he slowed when he passed the house and looked in through the large windows. He saw all the way through from the front window to the back of the house without interruption, so he figured the house must either be under construction or recently gutted.
This might just be the break Iâve been waiting for.
When Eagan and Dillon got back into their SUV and headed back to I-10 West, Buck returned to Royal Street. He parked his car, walked to the house, and peered in through the window. Yes! I was right. It is gutted.
Buck walked around the corner and nonchalantly strolled back and forth in front of the gate, checking the place out. He heard a vehicle coming up the street and ducked to the side when a truck pulled up to the security gate and stopped. He fumbled in his pocket for a cigarette, bowed his head as he put the cigarette in his mouth, and lit it. The truck had a sign on the door that said French Quarter Restoration. Buck watched from the corner of his eye as the driver punched four, two, four, two into the keypad, ignoring the presence of a man pausing for a cigarette, and the gate began to open slowly. Bingo! âFour, two, four, two,â he whispered to himself. This is my lucky day. Now all they need to do is buy this place and everything will fall into place.
Buck got in his truck and headed back to the North Shore. He remembered passing a library on St. Charles Avenue earlier that day when he was tailing the black Mercedes; that was the easiest place to get free access to a computer and the Internet. He checked in at the front desk, told the librarian heâd just moved to the area and his cable and Internet hadnât been installed yet, and wondered if he could use their computer to check his e-mail. The librarian handed him an application for a temporary library card, and he completed it using a bogus name and an address on Third Street. He almost panicked and darted when she told him to step in front of a camera so she could take his picture for his permanent library card, but he told himself to stay calm. He looked nothing like he had back then.
Buck stepped in front of the little screen, and the librarian moved the countertop camera back and forth until she was satisfied. âSay cheese,â she said seconds before the flash went off. She studied the computer screen, then turned the screen around and showed Buck his mug shot.
