CHAPTER EIGHT
TWO WEEKS LATER she hadnât spoken to Tateâbut she had confirmed everything he had said to her. She had checked with the Human Resources Department at Boston General and once she was on staff she would no longer be covered for any type of maternity leave. Physicians were considered self-employed, not hospital employees, and therefore not entitled to any employment benefits. She had also checked with her bank. Her student loans and her line of credit were average amongst her peers, but substantial compared to the average student. The debt would not wait for her return from maternity leave, and would require payments starting in three weeksâ time.
She didnât have a lot of options. She could take a week or two off at the most and then would have to work a full-time schedule of sixty hours a week to cover her loans, living expenses and child care. The idea of leaving her newborn in the hands of stranger made her want to stay pregnant forever. At least then they could be together. She didnât have family money, or nearby support to rely on. She was an only child and her parents were both academicsâcollege professors who had been in their forties when she was born, making them now in their seventies. They lived in Montana and visited at most once a year, their schedules still very much dependent on the academic calendar.
She was stuck, and she was going to have to ask for help. The question was from whom? Did she ask Tate for help, knowing that his help would not come without questions and conditions she would have to answer and give in to?
Or did she ask Kate, or more accurately Matt, for financial help, knowing it would be years before she would ever be able to pay him back? She had only known him for a short space of time and, while she was completely confident in his and Kateâs relationship, she had already done enough with her involvement with Tate to jeopardize her friendship with Kate. Asking her fiancé for an inordinate amount of money to help her support the child she was having with her ex seemed more bold than even she was ready for. They hadnât discussed her childâs paternity again, or the events leading to Tateâs proposal, but it was likely only a matter of time before everything came out.
It was hard to be over thirty, a physician, and still feeling as stuck and confused as a teenager.
She looked around the waiting room full of pregnant women and didnât miss the fact that she was one of the few women alone. She hadnât told Kate or Tate about this prenatal appointment and ultrasound so she couldnât feel sorry for herselfâshe had made a conscious choice to come alone.
âMs. Darcy,â a nurse called from the doorway, and she followed the woman down toward the exam rooms.
She waited patiently, and was happy and relieved when Erin knocked and entered the room.
âHey, I didnât know you were still around.
