Chapter Nine

Benji

“Are you sure this is going to work?” I asked as we marched into the castle. “I mean I know they agreed to offer their assistance and all, but that was only a week ago. They probably didn’t expect us to come back so soon. What if they say we’re asking for too much and tell us to leave?”

Jerric stopped and took my hand into his, squeezing tight before bringing it to his mouth for a kiss. It calmed me almost instantly. I didn’t know what it was about him—maybe it was a mate thing—but he had a way to stop my nerves in their tracks, which was something I’d never had to deal with when I was invisible most of the time. Sometimes I wished I could go back, but then all I had to do was look at my mate to remember why I was here.

“If they tell us to leave, then we leave. There’s nothing we can do if they shut us down, but if we don’t ask, then we’ll never know. Their support will be a huge help though, and they have many other allies that might help as well. We have no choice but to try. I don’t think it will be as big of a problem as you think, though,” he said.

“Why not?”

Jerric shrugged. “Because we have something they want and shouldn’t be able to refuse.”

“We do? Why haven’t you told me about this amazing thing?” I asked, putting my hands on my hips and stomping my foot. The instant I did it, I felt silly for overreacting, and heat filled my cheeks.

Arching one brow, Jerric tilted his head in confusion. “I haven’t said anything because you were in the room when we talked about it.”

Shit. I forgot all about the conversation with the king and his mate. I had started to get the tingling in the back of my mind that signaled an oncoming vision and had to block everything out to stop it, or I would have been a flailing, seizing, fainting mess in front of the entire vampire council, and I didn’t want to present myself as a weakness. I hadn’t told my mate about it because there were so many people around at the time and had completely forgotten about it until now.

“I’m sorry. I got a little distracted,” I said with a flinch, and Jerric growled.

“I thought I said to tell me if you were going to get a vision and I would help you through it. We agreed not to keep secrets from each other.”

“I wasn’t trying to keep things from you. I just forgot. I swear!” I cried, moving around in front of him so he could see my face. “You were in the middle of a meeting about the freaking wall falling and being attacked by giants. I figured that was a little more important at the time. I promise if I wasn’t able to push it back, I would have said something. You have to believe me.
