The squealing and squeaking outside finally diminished and I assumed that all of the meat had been devoured. But they were still hungry and I could hear them sniffing around the vents – searching for the blood they knew was nearby.

I held my breath, praying for a miracle, but I doubted I’d be granted one. No, it was all on me – I was the only being I could count on.

I sat still, trying not to make a sound. My head had stopped bleeding, but I knew that even the slightest movement could start it up again.

I stared at the vents, waiting.

The sniffing and scratching continued. The rats were getting closer to finding the source of the blood smell and that source was me.

The thin, cotton cloth stuffed into the vent openings began to move – the nasty rodents were trying to pull it out.

“No, no, no, no, no,” I whispered, holding the material in place with my hands.

I heard feet scurrying about. How many were out there? A dozen? More?

The cloth blocking the lowest vent moved suddenly, leaving the vent wide open.

Long dark whiskers and a black nose suddenly appeared.

I screamed.

They had found their target.

Hurriedly, I pushed more of the nightgown into the opening, shoving the vile creature’s nose back outside.

I was sweating profusely now, my heartrate through the roof. There was more action at the vents and I worked frantically to keep them blocked.

Then, I heard a sound that made me freeze.

The patter of feet on the top of the locker! But how?

I closed my eyes briefly, remembering the layout of the room. The little bastards must have climbed onto one of the air-conditioning units and jumped from there to the locker.

They were coming for me, this time from the top – squeezing through vents I had no way to plug.

My eyes were now wide open and I saw a small paw, with long, sharp nails, slip through the uppermost vent, searching.

I held my breath.

If that rodent got through, it would drop right in my lap – onto my bare skin!

My eyes darted back to the lower vents – there was more movement there. Desperately, I tried to cover the openings with my hands using the remainder of the nightgown. I was running out of time and terror was threatening to overwhelm me.

A squeaking sound came from above.

Keeping my hands over the cloth blocking the bottom vents, I looked up.

Two black eyes were staring at me. One of the rats had pushed its head inside.

I watched its nose quiver as it began to flatten out its body to squeeze its way further into the locker.

I could stand it no longer. Fear took over.

I screamed, and screamed, and screamed, and screamed…
