Chapter 16

Chase

Near Eagle, Alaska

April 10

It took Henry and Chase no time at all to interrogate the man and the woman, thankfully without having to resort to violence. They pulled over at an empty roadside camp, pulled them out of the back, and led them over to a bench. The man sucked in a breath when they showed him their arsenal, which comprised their pistols and knives. Chase barely had to threaten the man, whose name was Edgar, before he squealed. Once he showed him his ID, Edgar capitulated almost immediately. It was nothing like when they’d dealt with Volkov. The woman, named Nessa, remained a mystery as she cradled her hand in silence.

“So, let’s start from the beginning. Where were you taking us, and why?” Chase asked, pacing in front of them. He nodded to Henry, who stood behind the picnic table.

“To Eagle. The direction we’re headed,” Edgar said.

“What about the second part of the question?” Henry asked.

Edgar didn’t turn his head. “T-To bring the two of you in. There was something very off about the call we received from Volkov. His voice gave it away. You two are idiots.” He tilted his head to look at Henry. “You were foolish to even try that stunt. You’re lucky we didn’t kill both of you.”

Henry laughed. “You’re certainly one to talk. You’re part of this damn cartel,” he walked in front of Edgar, held out a hand, and counted out loud on his fingers, “and you kidnap people, auction them off, haul in drugs to worsen the state, and probably a lot of other things I don’t know about.”

Edgar sneered at him. “So? I’m not entirely proud of what I do, but it pays the bills.”

“Damn, you’re all the same,” Chase scoffed. “I’m sure the money’s great, but is it great enough to ruin the lives of countless numbers of people?” He paused and shook his head. “I already know the answer to that, so I don’t know why I bothered to ask. Have some respect for human life.”

“What did you do with Volkov?” Edgar asked.

“I don’t see why it matters to you, of all people.”

“Is he alive?”

Chase shrugged and put on a small, fake grin. “Who knows, at this point? Least of my worries. You and your friend are top of the list right now.” He watched Edgar’s face sink further.

“Let’s not stray too far from the subject,” Henry said. “What’s in Eagle? What were your plans for us?” He directed the last question at Nessa, but she continued to stare down at the ground. “If you don’t want to end up like your other friend and his family, I’d recommend you start talking. You’ve seen our IDs, but you don’t know what we’re capable of.”

“There’s a ‘distribution’ area set up over there,” Edgar said. “We would have taken you in, got paid, and then moved on with our day.”

“Back to our IDs.” Chase nodded toward the woman. “Earlier, she talked you down from shooting Henry. It was something about our IDs.
