CHAPTER ELEVEN

Killian

I really stepped in it now.

All my rage, pain, and suffering were driven into those guards. I just wanted to keep killing, and the more I killed, the less I thought of Ryker.

Through my peripheral, Ryker was running away, but I wasn’t sure if he was successful at getting away from me and the thought that I had killed him sent me into a tailspin; all I had left was to kill as many as possible before I met my fate.

You have no idea how relieved I was when I saw him again, alive and unharmed by me, though his face was swollen from the beating he had taken at the hands of the guards.

I dreamed of him often while locked away in this room. I dreamed of him walking through that heavy steel door and holding me in his arms. Whatever anger I had towards him, along with doubts and confusion, dissipated, and it was just the two of us in our own world that no one could penetrate.

The room I was locked in had nothing in it, just one of those old Japanese floor toilets. The walls were made of silver with magic symbols carved into it, which shimmered and pulsed like a heart beating.

This must be some sort of maximum security confinement, although I couldn’t hear any other prisoners aside from me. Unless these incantations on the walls prevented me from hearing anyone outside of my room.

There was nothing else to do except close my eyes and dream of Ryker. Here, there was no shame in wanting him and no anger at his betrayal. Or maybe I had just given up on trying to understand what was going through his mind. It wasn’t as if I would ever get an answer on why he stabbed me in the back.

The tingling sensation of magic snaked around me, and before I knew it, the silver chains of light had gripped my arms and legs, lifting me off the ground and slamming me against the back wall. What the hell was going on?

I got my answer when Shinzo opened the door and entered my little cell. The witch behind him maintained her careful control over these chains, ensuring I couldn’t break free.

“I thought I’d never see you again.” I snorted. “Dragons don’t usually waste time on commodities they believe useless.”

“If I thought you were useless, Killian, you would be dead.”

“And what do you want?”

“Cleaning up that mess at the barracks was not an easy task. You made me look incompetent.”

“Is it too late for an apology?” I said with biting sarcasm.

“You know that being a guard here is supposed to be easy work? Dragon parents tend to let their wayward children sign up here to get them out of the house and do something for themselves. No one expects to send their dumbass kid here to be ripped apart by some crazed hybrid. Lucky for you and me, no dragon was harmed in your rampage other than a few scrapes and bruises.
