Fate, like fire, is not selective about what it will consume.
Joseph Jacobsonâs Diary
I passed the weekend in a coma of despair. I must have watched at least eighteen hours of television. I didnât eat anything except a bag of potato chips, which I downed with at least a dozen beers. Why was this happening to me?
Monday morning came too early. The sky was overcast as if mirroring the dread that filled my heart. I wasnât at my desk for more than five minutes when my phone buzzed. âI want to see you in my office,â Peter said.
âAll right,â I said, even though heâd already hung up.
I walked to his office. Kim looked at me sympathetically, a very bad sign.
âPeter paged me,â I said.
âJust go in,â she said softly.
I stepped inside his office. He sat behind his desk, staring at me with disgust. I didnât know what Peter was going to do, but from his expression, I had a pretty good idea.
âI want your resignation.â
I looked at him a moment, then shook my head. âNo. I didnât do anything wrong.â
âAre you calling my fiancée a cheater or a liar?â
Pick one, I thought. I said nothing.
âAnd donât tell me she came up to the room to seduce you.â
âShe just had too much to drink, she . . .â I looked in his face. He was shaking with anger and the veins in his forehead bulged. â. . . Actually, thatâs exactly what happened.â
He stood up, pushing his chair back in the motion. He gestured wildly with his finger. âIf we werenât in this office right now, Iâd break you into a thousand pieces.â
âThen itâs a good thing weâre in this office,â I said coolly.
He glared at me for a moment, then said, âI canât fire you. But I can have you demoted and transferred.â
âOn what grounds,â I said. âYour fiancée attempting to seduce me?â
Peter pounded his desk hard, so hard I thought its glass cover would break. âYou say that again and this office wonât protect you.â
âIâm not your enemy, Peter.â
His eyes narrowed. âAnd Brandi is?â
I didnât answer him. Her unfaithfulness was clearly too much for him to handle. I sat down in the chair in front of his desk. âYou need to calm down.â
âI didnât tell you to sit.â
I just looked at him.
âI donât need H.R. approval to transfer you. Iâm sending you to our New York officeâunless you decide to resign. Either works for me. Make your choice.â
I couldnât believe that I was being banished again. Still, banishment or not, I couldnât stay in Chicago. Potts would make my life miserable. I should say more miserable. I had lost April. I was already suffering.
âIâll go to New York,â I said.
âGood riddance,â he said. He pulled his chair forward and sat.
âWhom do I report to?â
âAsk Kim. Now get out of my office.â
I walked to the door. I hesitated just a moment, then turned back and walked toward Peterâs desk.
âMy father was big on self-defense,â I said. âHe insisted that all of his boys be able to take care of themselves.
