âI had a friend who fell three stories and lived to tell about it, but Iâd rather not risk itâespecially being here on my own,â Victor explained from down below, while Pablo cleared a large branch and some other debris from the roof.
âThree stories!â Pablo exclaimed. âAnd he lived?â
âNot only did he live, but despite both feet being reduced to bags of bones, he learned to walk again, too. And quite well, I might add, without any assistance. Eventually I even saw him dance a tango with his wife.â
â¿En serio? Thatâs incredible!â
âIndeed, it was,â Victor reminisced. âNever underestimate the bodyâs miraculous healing power. Or, for that matter, the determination of the human spirit!â
Once the work was done, Victor brought out a pitcher of lemonade made with fruit from his own trees, and the two took seats on the porch.
âSo, my friend, how did it feel to tell your cousin you were interested in the job?â
âAt first I was really nervous. I couldnât believe I was doing it. But as soon as I told him, I felt great. It was like a huge weight had lifted, and I knew Iâd done the right thing.â
âThen you almost certainly did. No sooner do you make a decision based on what you feel in your heart, than you find yourself awash in an unmistakable sense of peace. You have the inexplicable yet undeniable assurance thatâas you saidâyou've done the right thing. Or, the opposite might be true. You have a horrible feeling in the pit in your stomach urging you not to do something and, as soon as you decide against it, the pain dissipatesâand you subsequently learn that you made the right decision.â
âSo you do have reasons to believe your intuition,â Pablo observed. âIf things work out like you thought, you know you werenât imagining them.â
âSometimes. But reason isnât the reason, so to speak. Logic isnât what gets you thereâto those reassuring feelings or those validating outcomes. Inevitably they come after the fact, if they come at all.â
Having worked up a thirst, Pablo practically downed his first glass of lemonade in one gulp. Victor poured him another before offering some words of caution.
âItâs very exciting, but try not to get too attached. Donât put all your eggs in one basket. Stay open to other possibilities, too. In hindsight, you might look back on Barcelona as just the beginning.â
Pablo hadnât thought of that, and it was disconcerting to do so now. As much as he hated to admit it, there was no ignoring the wisdom in Victorâs advice. On the other hand, as long as it hatched, one egg would be more than enough.
âWhat about you? If youâve been so many amazing places, why are you staying around here?â
Pablo had asked the question before, but he wasnât convinced heâd ever gotten the full answer.
âFirst of all, I would argue that this, too, is an amazing place,â Victor was quick to insist, taking a drink. âIf it werenât, youâre rightâI probably wouldnât be here. But I understand why youâre asking.
