Elliot was in a bloody fury.

He followed the Sinclair carriage all the way back to their house. After that, he headed to the wharf, where he knew his ally would be waiting. They already had a meet set up to review their progress. Supposedly the information would then be passed along to the director of the War Department.

“Damn it to hell and back,” he muttered.

She was frightened. It took a great deal to discombobulate Annalise, but that rat bastard succeeded. What sort of bastard attacked a woman in a crowded ballroom? Who was so desperate that they would take such a chance? He never intended his work to touch her.

“What’s your problem?” Gabriel Weston asked as he eased out of the shadows into the dim moonlight.

“My problem is that this entire enterprise is full of leaks!” he bellowed.

He would have said more, but he caught a good look at his companion. He had a bruised and swelling eye and another scrape along his cheek. There was a stain on his crisp white shirt that he suspected might be blood. He was even limping.

“Christ! What happened to you?”

“A lady decided she didn’t enjoy my charms, after all.”

Elliot tensed. “Indeed?”

Gabriel pulled out a cheroot and made a show of lighting the tube of tobacco. He rudely blew smoke directly into Elliot’s face. “Some fight this war in ballrooms and some fight it in bedrooms.”

“Tonight the ballroom was fraught with violence,” Elliot retorted coolly. “A man openly assaulted Lady Annalise in the middle of a crowded ballroom.”

“You’re shitting me,” Gabe choked.

“No, I’m not jesting or overreacting. The woman’s wrist was nearly broken.”

“Wow. Any other lady and they might have succeeded, but that woman has grit.”

“Yes, she does,” Elliot agreed, calming at the reminder. “Lord Sinclair attacked the man, I’ll have you know.”

“Damn. I thought he was an old prude.”

“I’m certain she was attacked because of me.”

Weston puffed on his cigar thoughtfully. “Why?”

“I’ve been seen spending time with the woman, not to mention she is connected to me by marriage. It is commonly known that I’ve escorted her to town a couple of times this season. I’ve already been warned once.”

“You may be right.”

“Damn it, plug the leaks!” he shouted.

“Then you do the job you were hired to do!”

Elliot whirled. “Are you threatening me?”

“No, I’m not threatening you, but you’ve been very slow deciphering this latest communication.”

“It is using symbols that have no meaning! What the hell do you expect? I’m trying, damn it. I’m reading every book I can find about odd symbols. I’m going through history and science and every language known to mankind. I can’t find the link.”

“Keep trying. Our time is running out while you’re chasing after a skirt.”

“Now that she’s been targeted, I’ll be chasing after her a lot more.”

“That should please the bitch. How do you know she didn’t orchestrate this herself?”

“Her mind doesn’t work that way, you sick bastard.”

“You underestimate women. They’ll steal all you have.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What for?” Gabriel wanted to know.

“I’m sorry
