Elliot was in a bloody fury.
He followed the Sinclair carriage all the way back to their house. After that, he headed to the wharf, where he knew his ally would be waiting. They already had a meet set up to review their progress. Supposedly the information would then be passed along to the director of the War Department.
âDamn it to hell and back,â he muttered.
She was frightened. It took a great deal to discombobulate Annalise, but that rat bastard succeeded. What sort of bastard attacked a woman in a crowded ballroom? Who was so desperate that they would take such a chance? He never intended his work to touch her.
âWhatâs your problem?â Gabriel Weston asked as he eased out of the shadows into the dim moonlight.
âMy problem is that this entire enterprise is full of leaks!â he bellowed.
He would have said more, but he caught a good look at his companion. He had a bruised and swelling eye and another scrape along his cheek. There was a stain on his crisp white shirt that he suspected might be blood. He was even limping.
âChrist! What happened to you?â
âA lady decided she didnât enjoy my charms, after all.â
Elliot tensed. âIndeed?â
Gabriel pulled out a cheroot and made a show of lighting the tube of tobacco. He rudely blew smoke directly into Elliotâs face. âSome fight this war in ballrooms and some fight it in bedrooms.â
âTonight the ballroom was fraught with violence,â Elliot retorted coolly. âA man openly assaulted Lady Annalise in the middle of a crowded ballroom.â
âYouâre shitting me,â Gabe choked.
âNo, Iâm not jesting or overreacting. The womanâs wrist was nearly broken.â
âWow. Any other lady and they might have succeeded, but that woman has grit.â
âYes, she does,â Elliot agreed, calming at the reminder. âLord Sinclair attacked the man, Iâll have you know.â
âDamn. I thought he was an old prude.â
âIâm certain she was attacked because of me.â
Weston puffed on his cigar thoughtfully. âWhy?â
âIâve been seen spending time with the woman, not to mention she is connected to me by marriage. It is commonly known that Iâve escorted her to town a couple of times this season. Iâve already been warned once.â
âYou may be right.â
âDamn it, plug the leaks!â he shouted.
âThen you do the job you were hired to do!â
Elliot whirled. âAre you threatening me?â
âNo, Iâm not threatening you, but youâve been very slow deciphering this latest communication.â
âIt is using symbols that have no meaning! What the hell do you expect? Iâm trying, damn it. Iâm reading every book I can find about odd symbols. Iâm going through history and science and every language known to mankind. I canât find the link.â
âKeep trying. Our time is running out while youâre chasing after a skirt.â
âNow that sheâs been targeted, Iâll be chasing after her a lot more.â
âThat should please the bitch. How do you know she didnât orchestrate this herself?â
âHer mind doesnât work that way, you sick bastard.â
âYou underestimate women. Theyâll steal all you have.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhat for?â Gabriel wanted to know.
âIâm sorry
