CHAPTER SEVEN

IT WAS ALMOST eight by the time the surgery was over, and Christian still needed to write the post-operative notes and hand them over to his staff member on night shift. Though the brain haemorrhage wasn’t as severe as others he had worked on, he knew Dylan had suffered that injury several days ago—and had only now received the medical attention he’d needed.

He needed to thank Raquel for her quick thinking on that day. If she hadn’t given the paramedics their names and told them which hospital they worked at, he might have been turned away again. He knew most of his colleagues were trying to make the best out of a difficult situation, since not all hospitals had the same funding and staffing as Whitehall Memorial, but it bothered him to know how easily they had dismissed Dylan after he’d suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Seeing Raquel through the window of the scrub room had been unexpected, and he’d reacted before he could even think about whether he wanted her so close to him in surgery. With the way she’d been on his mind, and fantasies of her distracting him whenever he sat behind his computer to work on his papers, he’d half-expected the burning heat of his attraction to her to take over.

But nothing of the sort had happened—quite the opposite. The shock that the unexpected page had caused in him still hadn’t worn off and, though he’d been in enough situations where he’d had to shake things off, her presence had been...calming. Unexpected, yes, but she’d also soothed away any worries that had been clinging to him. An effect that wasn’t wholly unknown to him, but one he’d forgotten over the years until the person who had inspired that sense of security within him had come back into his life.

Christian glanced around the empty operating room. He’d left the post-operative care to the most senior resident so he could get home. Though Lexi was old enough to look after herself for an evening, he still didn’t enjoy being away for so long. Her having the company of the service dog now made him rest easier, he noticed. He was glad he could already see the desired effect on his niece and her companion, with all the training and effort she and Raquel had put into Nesta.

He shook his head with a sigh, his gaze travelling up the wall to check on the time, his eyes stopping as they met an intense brown-green set staring right at him from inside the scrub room—again.

An unbidden heat flared up within his chest as his eyes bored into hers, seeing a spark of something inside them that had him tense and loose all at the same time. Whatever that something was, it was dangerous—and he had to have it. There was no other alternative, despite that small voice in the back of his mind telling him that there absolutely was. The other path lay beyond the door at his back rather than through the one leading to the scrub room.
