Paso Robles
Palmira Gorham and Angie had been friends since they met at beauty school in Paso Robles. Gorham looked up to Angie. Her older friend had been in the service, she’d been married, she had kids, and she knew a thing or two about men.
Like most friendships, Angie and Palmira had their ups and downs. Sometimes they’d talk, other times they would avoid each other. Sometimes their arguments were about men, sometimes about money.
Both women felt just fine in confiding in one another. In fact, after meeting Frank, Angie told her friend about her new lover and how the two were going to move down to LA.
Later Angie would tell her friend how much Frank annoyed her, and even later she would confide in Palmira about just how much she wanted to kill him.
Palmira also hooked Angie up with her nephew, Daniel. Angie told Daniel she wanted to be with him, and explained that she would go as far as killing Frank to do it.
A couple of weeks after Frank’s death, Angie took her daughter and moved up to Paso Robles. Palmira began to notice that she was spending a lot of time on the phone with detectives, the insurance company, and the coroner.
It was like the old game of telephone. Angie would call the coroner, get some information; call the detectives, try to fish something out of them; call the insurance company, try to cajole a check; and start all over again.
Palmira thought all that telephone time was exhausting. Angie looked at it as work. She was doing what she could to outsmart a whole lot of people, and it would require keeping her story straight, figuring out what the cops knew, and trying to push the coroner to do his work.
