HOW DOES ONE WRITE A SONG? I REMEMBER SEVENTIES ads for Prell shampoo that showed a pearl floating through the amorphous goop. And I used to think songwriting was like that: You had to have something loose inside you, something rattling around, and you shook it up and then followed it around and took dictation.

Cliché-lovers command, “Write what you know”—as in, “those who know history are doomed to repeat it . . . and repeat it” (thanks to inventive guitarist Henry Kaiser for this observation). But it is good advice. The New Musical Express once cited a quip I have always adored: Producer Nick Lowe, after recording a blistering Telecaster take probably by Billy Bremner, turned to the guitarist and said, “I see you’ve read my pamphlet on guitar playing; perhaps now you’d like to buy the complete set?” I thought about this over the years, guffawing every time, and then set about actually writing an introductory pamphlet for all the first-timers I was producing, laying out what it was really like to make a record. Wishing someone had warned me! Then I pulled a Pete Seeger and set it to song instead.
