Chapter Thirteen

Andre had promised to call Molly after he visited Brittany’s west-side apartment. She imagined Brittany was gone. She had suspected someone at GRD told Brittany the IT department was analyzing her emails and printing history, so she’d decided to run. Either she was guilty of murdering Victor and they just hadn’t put the pieces together correctly, or she’d been a witness. In that case, the police wouldn’t be the only ones searching for her. Such an angry killer wouldn’t hesitate to eliminate her if she thought Brittany was a threat.

Molly resumed her planned agenda. Eden Venegas had been quite cordial on the phone and invited Molly to her home at the Cascades condo complex. She didn’t sound like a grieving widow, nor did she sound angry, as Andre had reported.

The Cascades had once been apartments, but because they’d been built in the seventies, at a time when developers were still selling Phoenicians on the concept of apartment living, their square footage rivaled that of a small house. Since Millennial thinking suggested condos were always larger than apartments, the current owners had upgraded the units and sold them for quite a profit.

She entered a swank lobby with leather furniture and marble floors. A handsome young security guard sat behind a large counter that looked as if it was the command station for a spaceship. His name badge read Ramon and he greeted her with a smile. When she mentioned Eden’s name, his face turned to putty, much like Pete Daly’s had. Molly was quite curious to meet a woman whose name inspired such physical reactions from men.

He gushed when he called Eden. She must have asked him to do something unpleasant, because his goofy smile cracked slightly. But he still agreed. When he hung up, he looked surly when he buzzed her through. She took the elevator to the seventh floor, and as the doors opened, a child pushed inside. Molly quickly stepped to the left before the boy and the remote control plane he held smashed into her stomach.

“Miguel, wait!” a woman shouted.

He moved to the corner, holding the plane under his chin. She guessed he was about eleven. He didn’t look thrilled to be sent outside, and she guessed the unhappy security guard would be babysitting him while she talked to Eden. He wore blue shorts and a white polo shirt, a standard school uniform. She noted a school emblem on the shirt, an atom embroidered in bright yellow thread. She remembered he went to school at the Phoenix Technical Science Academy, along with Brittany Spring’s kid. She wondered why he wasn’t in school, but she didn’t think such a question would be the best opening for her conversation.

Eden stood against the open doors and smiled at Molly. Lovely and exotic, she had the fragile face of a doll, with large, dark eyes and flawless light brown skin. Her cream colored dress and matching hose suggested she’d be attending a fancy luncheon after their chat, but Molly sensed she dressed up when the plumber visited.
