I am on top of the world.
Two nights ago, I confessed to Quint and to myself out loud that Iâve fallen in love with him. I donât know how this happened, but I fell hard for that loving cowboy.
As infuriated as I was with him when we first met, heâs looked after me and has shown me nothing but respect and kindness. I will forever be embarrassed by my behavior.
I have even tried to talk myself out of thinking about the next four weeks. I have to leave, to go home. Iâve tried to not think about what will happen to Quint and me after that. But thoughts of leaving fill me with melancholy. Quint and I will never make this work between us because of the distance. Yet I have to go home. School starts in a few weeks.
The day my brother Jackson broke his leg when he fell from that horse, I decided right then and there that I wanted to be a doctor. That desire has never lessened.
Every conversation that weâve had about where we both are now, what we want for the future, and how hard we both have worked on our careers keeps replaying in my mind. And every scenario I envision ends with Quint staying here on his ranch and me returning home to start classes and continue my path toward becoming a pediatric doctor.
Throughout all the long conversations weâve had in the last two days, not once did either of us bring up what may happen at the end of my summer stay on the Sawyer Ranch. Quint and I talked about plenty of things, like the fall harvest, what book Iâm reading, and just about us.
There are times when he would get this blank look on his face when his phone would ring, and he would walk away to take the call. His voice would be happy but his expression still unreadable. That is one for the list of things we need to talk about.
âHey, you.â
One of the most beautiful sounds that I now love to hear. I look over across the fence bordering the pigletsâ pen to see Quint.
I have stayed as far from the horses as I possibly can. Thatâs why I work on one of the farm sections on the ranch. Currently, Iâm putting the piglets back in the outside pen now that they are old enough to be with their mother, outside.
I look over at Quint with visible horror. Iâm covered from the middle of my shirt down to my boots in mud, which Iâm currently standing ankle-deep in. I canât imagine that I look a pretty picture.
Heâs just smiling from ear-to-ear at me. I canât help but smile back. I feel so unattractive at this moment, and heâs still looking at me like Iâm the most beautiful woman heâs ever seen.
âHey,â I say, using my shoulder to wipe at my chin or whatever I think may be on my chin.
âYou almost done?â he asks.
âI donât know. Youâre the boss.
