The cause of death was a fracture of the second cervical vertebra.
The coroner didnât speculate about the nature of the injury or how it might have been caused, only that it was there. Until then, Robin had assumed the same thing that everyone at the crime scene did, that the cause of Kathrynâs death was blunt trauma to the head, evidenced by blood on the floor, a fractured skull, and a struggle with an apparent intruder. She finished reading the autopsy report and advanced to an assortment of photos taken at the scene and the morgue.
Carmen returned at last. âDetective, I found the information youâre looking for. The coroner on call that day was Dr. Benjamin Bjork.â
Robin turned off the computer. âIâd like to speak to him.â
âIâm afraid you canât; he died several months ago.â
âHow did he die?â
âA heart attack they say. Actually this was one of the last autopsies he performed. I remember because we couldnât find a coroner to perform the autopsy on him. It would have been amusing if it werenât so tragic.â
Robin wasnât amused. âI have one more question.â She checked the margin of her notes. âWhat is a nulliparous cervix?â
Carmen knew the answer from personal experience. âItâs the cervix of a woman who never had a baby.â
âThank you.â Robin gathered her notes and found her way back through the maze of corridors to the harsh sunlight of the streets. Upon her return to the precinct she ignored the puerile comments that typically greeted her and found a ringing phone at her desk. âPrecinct, Detective Noel.â
âRobin, I forgot to mention something before. Do you remember a classmate from high school named Howell Martin?â
âYes.â
âGood, you might want to find out what he was doing that day.â
Robinâs greater temptation was to ask Bence Jones about his own whereabouts. âThanks, Iâll look into it.â She jotted down the name Howell Martin and hung up without another word. Seconds later the phone rang again. She grabbed the receiver and shouted, âWhat?â
âRobin, is that you?â
She rubbed a tired shoulder. âSorry, I thought it was someone else.â She pressed a palm to her forehead and held it there. âNo, Iâm working late. Donât wait up for me. What happened to the doctor you were supposed to see? Thatâs great.â They shared a brief silence. âLetâs make plans for Saturday, okay? Love you.â
Robin was comforted by the news. Mallory was feeling better. She checked her list of names and resumed the search for Kathrynâs killer.
