Act four

“I hate you,” Emma said as they entered school.

“Not my fault you lost your shirt,” Lois replied.

“You’re the one that insisted on putting order again,” Emma argued.

“Whatever, I’m not having this discussion right now.” They walked around the school building. “We’re only thirty minutes late, Britney’s not gonna think you ditched because of it,” Lois said as they reached the Stone Yard.

Emma had to pause to take everything in. For starters, it was bright.

From the walls hung industrial lights that were blinding to look at, and the center of the yard had been equipped with massive party lights that changed color and moved and made Emma remember why she hated parties. On the circular platform stood a DJ with all the relevant equipment, and Emma thought she recognized the guy as one of St. Joseph’s teachers.

Students mingled and danced to the loud rock blaring through the speakers, and Emma couldn’t help but notice—with some disgust—that there were parents and teachers chaperoning the place.

Emma didn’t see Britney.

“Ok, Imma go eat something,” Lois pointed to the food table on the right side of the place. Emma nodded and kept looking around. “And stop looking here, idiot, where do you think Britney will be?”

After an extra second looking around, Emma realized what Lois meant. “Oooh, you have a point,” Emma smiled. Would Britney think like that too? It would be wonderful.

“The school is closed though,” Lois pointed at the dark insides.

“Eh, the third-graders’ classroom window is broken, everyone knows that. I can get in through there.”

Lois blinked a couple times. “I’m not even gonna ask how you know that, or why you assume everyone does. See you later. Get a girlfriend, ok?” Lois put a hand on her arm.

Emma nodded. “I sure hope I will,” she said, patting Lois’s shoulder before turning and walking towards the broken window.

The inside of the school was only lit by whatever light slipped through the windows from the Stone Yard or the streets. Enough to see by, not enough to make out details.

Enough to see the couples kissing in various corners, or the people on their phones, or the crying loners. Emma walked down the left wing of the school carefully. She didn’t want to draw attention to herself, but it was hard, since she was the tallest girl in school, and the fact that she’d chosen to wear a tank-top that showed off her muscles didn’t exactly help.

Still, nobody paid her much mind. It made sense, at this point. Who gave a crap? They were all gonna be out of this life in two weeks.

Emma was about to go upstairs when she heard a voice. “Just give it back.”

It was Britney’s. Looking up, Emma could see her figure and a boy’s, backlit by the big paneled windows of the landing.

“Come on,” the guy said. Emma didn’t recognize him. For a second she thought it might’ve been Carlos, but this guy was way too tall—probably taller than Emma. He was holding something over his head. A purse? And Britney couldn’t reach it.
