The next morning, the owner of the house returned with some friends. He expected to find only Dampier, swinging alone in his hammock, and was astonished to discover three Englishmen, four Achinese sailors, and a "mungrel Portuguese" making themselves at home. Yet "he seemed to be very well pleased" and liberally shared the large calabash of toddy he had brought with him among his unexpected guests. They purchased a seagoing canoe from him in exchange for their ax and began loading their battered sea chests and clothes into it. According to Dampier, the canoe was about the length of the London wherries that whisked people and goods along the Thames, though deeper and narrower. The plan was to paddle to the south of the island, "lie there till the monsoon shifted," and then launch out across the sea, over 120 miles to Achin on Sumatra's northern coast.
