Chapter Fourteen
Life filtered through the open window of the cab Indie was riding in. Hues of green that stretched as far as the eye could see. Flats of land gave way to deep forests that hummed with a cacophony of birdsong. Off in the distance somewhere was a rolling river, the sound of the rushing rapids followed her as the cab bumped its way up a gravel path leading to the drop off point. When the cab came to a standstill and she stepped out into the wide open land, Indie was breathless.
Aurora Acres was a little pocket of heaven hidden in the middle of Sapphire Lakes. She couldnât believe she had almost missed out on seeing it.
âThis place is huge. How have I never been here before?â she asked herself, reaching into the trunk and pulling out her backpack.
Two long buildings sat in the middle of the graveled area she stood in. One, a large red brick building with a hand painted sign letting her know it was âStaff Headquartersâ, the other was a weather-worn, wooden hut containing what looked to be basic food supplies and essentials.
Life bustled around her as people shuffled their feet along well worn paths in the grass, some carrying what she assumed was camping equipment, others simply lugging backpacks like her own. They all looked like they knew where they were going. Lucky them.
She hitched her backpack further up onto her already aching shoulders, cursing herself for having packed what was probably too much. Three days ago, she had convinced herself she wouldnât be coming. She had procrastinated hard and reasoned that seeing as how she didnât possess any of the equipment needed for such a trip as had been described on the itinerary it was safer for her to decline the invitation. It wasnât like anyone would have missed her, it had been a mistaken invitation anyway. After coming to term with her whole situation regarding Steph she had given serious thought to not coming here today. But a text from Amber and a second chance meet-cute in the park yesterday had changed her mind.
She didnât own a sleeping bag, or a tent for that matter. But fortunately for her, Jocelyn had allowed her to take what she needed from the remnants of her ex-husband's belongings from the garage. Thankfully she hadnât thrown his things away. Indie and Emily had spent a good hour and a half going through the piles of sports equipment and camping supplies until she found what she was looking for.
She had sourced pretty much everything she would need. A tent, a sleeping bag, even an inflatable bed. The stuff looked a little dated, but Indie knew it would have been of good quality. Harrison had always displayed expensive taste. Fully equipped, she had no excuse not to come and yesterdayâs accidental run-in with Rowan had left Indie feeling -dare she say it- excited.
Four days at Aurora Acres.
Sure it was four days where she had actively chosen to be
