Chapter Twenty One
Wheels were turning in her head and her mind was going in directions that she didn't like. Directions that left her feeling cold and more than a little sick.
âYou said that Katie Bedford was on Gabe's softball team.â
âThat's right,â Bree started. Then she stopped. âNo. No, no, no.â
âNo what?â Del asked, arms bristling with goosebumps.
âI see what you're getting at, though I'm damned if I know how you made the leap. But let me stop you right there,â Bree said. She was flushed, her eyes flashing in the moonlight. âGabe definitely has his faults, don't get me wrong. But he loves those kids. He treats those girls like family. There's no way in hell...â
âThere's no way in hell what?â Del asked quietly.
âThat he hurt her. No way.â She sounded adamant.
He treated them like family.
Del knew the statistics. When kids went missing they were nearly always harmed by someone they knew. By someone in their family. She could feel the blue mist starting to trickle over her vision. She shook her head. She was being ridiculous. She barely knew Gabe. She hadn't seen him since she was eighteen and graduating. If anyone knew him, it was Bree, and she said he wouldn't hurt the girl.
Still though, it all started to make a strange kind of sense. Gabe acting weird, throwing his wife out of the house, maybe knowing already what he was going to do, knowing that he... he what? He had feelings for the girl, Del thought. That would make sense. He had feelings for her, he acted on them, she got scared or angry or something, and an accident happened.
âDel, listen to me. Gabe has nothing to do with Katie Bedford. You're taking giant leaps here.â
She took a breath. âFine, right, understood.â She glanced at Bree who seemed mollified by her answer. Then her eyes caught the pile of soil at the end of the driveway. âSo,â she said, casually. âWhat about this landscaping then?â
Bree looked over at the soil and shrugged. âI've got no idea. But then, I don't live there anymore.â
âIt wasn't a planned thing then?â Landscaping took a while to plan, to hire the right people, to get the materials delivered.
âNope,â Bree said. She sighed and rubbed her eyes and in the house the lights turned off. âHe's gone to bed, I don't think we're going to catch him doing anything tonight. Why don't we head back?â
She put her hand on Del's leg and Del felt a shudder of warmth go through her. But that pile of soil was still in her eyeline.
She leaned forward, watching the house. She wanted to get in there. If not the house, at least the garden. She wanted a look. Just to satisfy her curiosity. Just to let her know that the blue mist was wrong, that she was doing it again, being over-zealous. Because something in her head was screaming at her, telling her that she wasn't wrong.
She tapped her fingers on the steering wheel, about to open the door of the truck.
