‘Okay. So not mitral valve.’ He kept his reaction steady, although the words had his own heart reeling as images skittered through his head. Pippa. Tubes. A form. A dotted line. The reassuring beeps by the hospital bed. Then no beeps, just silence. Then later...much, much later...a letter thanking him for the gift of life. A letter he’d cast aside because he wanted his wife back, not pieces of paper.
He shook the thoughts away. This was Rose. She was alive and vibrant and here and needed him to be present and kind. Not regretful or distracted. He reached out and stroked her hair. It wasn’t an issue she had with him, or them, after all. It was just something she needed to get out there. A huge deal. ‘And just look at you. I would never have guessed. You look amazing.’
So many questions ran through his head. When? Where? Why? All the medical stuff. And the sudden realisation that there were ramifications too: issues with carrying children, shortened life expectancy, how her body could reject this heart at any time.
This was a very big deal.
‘Thank you.’ Her shoulders relaxed a little and she smiled softly. ‘Once people know they either run a mile or shoot the pity line, which I hate. I’m not sick now; I’m very healthy.’
Her skin glowed, energy resonated from her even now when she was sitting so close to him. ‘Yes. You are.’
‘I probably should have said something sooner, but when’s the best time to introduce it into a conversation? First meeting? Hi, my name’s Rose and I had a heart transplant. That’s just weird, especially if you’re never going to see that person again.’ Her eyebrows rose. ‘First date? We haven’t really had one, have we? When is a good time to tell someone you’re not exactly in pristine condition and should perhaps be put in the seconds bin for a cheap sale?’
He frowned. ‘Rose. That’s not how it is at all. You’re not in any seconds bin. It’s a second chance. It’s wonderful.’
‘And not something I’m keen to talk about usually. Because I’m more than the sum of my working parts, right? I don’t want to be treated any differently. Please—’ she palmed his cheek ‘—stop looking at me like that.’
‘Like what?’ Pity? He’d never pity her. He tried to straighten out his features. ‘You are more than anyone I’ve ever met, to be honest. But...how weird that...er...nothing.’ He ran his fingers over his scalp. Heart transplant. The coincidence was weird, but not necessarily startling. Transplants happened most days in this country. He found his gaze straying over to the photograph on his desk. A copy of the one Rose had been looking at the other day. Every step forward he took away from his past seemed to glue him back there again. His own heart tightened, then he drew his focus back to the woman opposite him. ‘Sorry. I shouldn’t keep bringing Pippa into conversations, but it’s just weird that we donated some of her organs.
