CHAPTER 12
Melia
Melia didnât remember the ride down in the elevator to the parking garage. She didnât even remember getting into Willâs car or the drive. She was so inside her head with what had happened, and what could have happened, nothing else registered.
Will must have sensed her need for time to process because he silently drove them home.
Sheâd been so scared. Then seeing her strong, loud dad looking nothing like himself and hooked up to tubes and wires had rocked the foundation of her world. Sheâd never seen her father without a smile on his face or a joke waiting to tell. He was a big beast of a man with the soul of a puppy. He was kind and gentle and sheâd never heard him say a negative word.
Life without her father was something she wasnât ready for. Sheâd never be ready. Her head fell back against the leather headrest and closed her eyes. She must have fallen asleep because she awoke to Will opening her door and lifting her from his ridiculously expensive car. She blinked and asked, âWhy are we at your place?â
Will closed the car door and walked right onto the awaiting elevator that would take them straight to his penthouse.
âYou donât need to be alone and my place is closer to the hospital than yours.â The elevator doors slid open with a whoosh and her cheek rested on his shoulder. If she wasnât so exhausted and about to die of starvation, sheâd argue with him, but in her weakened state, his thoughtfulness made her eyes cloudy with emotional tears.
He walked down the hallway and into his bedroom. Melia knew he had a guest room, but she was weak and she didnât want to examine why she wanted to sleep in his arms that night. Gently, he let her feet touch the ground. âYou could have asked, you know.â
With a heavy sigh, he tipped her chin. âYouâre right. I could have, Lia, but let me take care of you tonight. I had Janel stop by your apartment and grab a few things for you. Why donât you take a shower and Iâll see what we have to eat. Then weâll crawl in bed and Iâll hold you all night long. Or at least for whatâs left of the night.â
What he described sounded heavenly. Plus she was too tired to complain and there was nothing sheâd like better than to sleep safely surrounded by Will. Call her crazy. Somewhere in the back of her mind were thoughts of keeping her distance from him, but she simply didnât care.
âYouâll find what you need in the bathroom or my closet. Iâll also call to check on your dad while you get ready for bed.â
She wrapped her arms around his waist and let her forehead fall to his chest. âThank you, Will. I donât know what Mom and I would have done without you.â
âNo thanks are necessary, Lia. Itâs what best friends do.â
Her stomach rumbled and she tipped her head upward.
