Korban saw that a buggy was just going down the road as he pulled into the yard. He couldn’t help but wonder what had happened, knowing they had left the social at least fifteen minutes before he had.

He walked the girls to the house before taking care of the horses. The door was locked. That was odd. He knocked and called to Eddy, with her opening it a few moments later.

She looked frazzled when she opened the door.

“Is everything alright? Why was the door locked?”

“Everything is fine, Korban,” she sighed. “I don’t like to be alone at night with the doors unlocked.”

He nodded, but still wasn’t convinced. “Are you sure you’re alright? You seem a bit out of sorts.”

“I’m just tired and want to go to bed.” She looked around at the girls going toward their room to change into their nightgowns.

“Korban? Where’s your ma?”

He grinned at her. “Well, for a cup of coffee and a few minutes of your time, I will tell you.”

She grinned and he winked at her before turning to take care of the horses. “I’ll be back in a few minutes,” he called over his shoulder.

After putting the coffee on, she hurried to help the girls into bed, promising them two stories the next night because it was so late tonight. Then she quickly changed into her nightgown and wrapped a shawl around herself to be decent.

When she made it back to the kitchen, Korban was pouring two cups of coffee, motioning her to sit.

For the next hour, they talked more comfortably and pleasantly than they ever had, of course, Mrs. Snider was the main topic.

They enjoyed each other’s company until they heard Mrs. Snider come in. When she joined them in the kitchen, Korban badgered and teased her relentlessly. She was a good sport and enjoyed every moment of their time.
