CHAPTER 6
Snowy Dreams
Emily Hill was about the sweetest little angel Ray had ever laid his eyes on. The girl, who was Mae's age, had short curly red hair and a cheery round face that belonged on every television screen across America. Emily was deaf, but that didn't stop the sweet girl from smiling, telling jokes with her hands, and drawing silly pictures. Emily Hill, Ray realized in a very short, brief, period of time, was filled with a raging heart full of love, laughter and life.
Ray wasn't the only one who fell in love with Emily. Melissa and Jack Arnold melted into the little girls hands within seconds...along with Haley, Heather, Hope, Mae, Charlie...and especially Lincoln. Not a single person wanted to see Emily leave. When it came time to leave Mae began to pout. âBut Aunt Nelly, why can't Emily stay overnight?â
Nelly stood by the back door putting on a blue coat while Emily rested next to her holding two warm plates covered with white cloth napkins. âOh, honey, I wish Emily could sleep over, but I have to work tomorrow and Emily has to see Mrs. Oaks. Mrs. Oaks is her learning specialist. My sister has to have Emily in San Antonio at nine sharp.â
âOh...I understand...I guess,â Mae frowned and then reached out and touched Emily's little hand. âBye,â she waved. Emily waved back, also frowning.
âSay!â Ray boomed to his feet, startling everyone. âI got an idea. Why don't you and Emily both stay the night, Nelly? You can sleep in bed with Cassidy and Emily, the sweet dear, can sleep in bed with Mae. And tomorrow we'll all drive Emily to her appointment in San Antonio and do some Christmas shopping afterward...all of us.â
âWell...Ray, that's very kind, but I have a shift at the diner,â Nelly explained, zipping up her coat. âI'm a working woman. Bills don't go into hiding just because it's Christmas.â
Ray rubbed his chin. He had enjoyed Nelly's lovely company so much during supper that he hated to see the woman leave. What could he do? Ray needed to think. He was known to be a very clever and creative man. âHow much do you make at the diner?â he asked in a thoughtful voice.
Nelly threw her eyes at Cassidy. Cassidy was leaning against the kitchen counter working down a cup of coffee. All through supper she witnessed Ray barely take his eyes off Nelly. Ray is a wonderful man...sure, he has a plump belly, but so what? Not all cowboys are lean and fit. But...is he really Nelly's type? Nelly was dating Paul...Paul is a cop...and Paul is also lean and fit. Ray...he's a jolly fella...Paul was hard and military-like. Nelly isn't much for jokes or romantic movie nights. She's like me...always has to be on the move, working, doing something. Even if Ray dared to ask her on a date, and I think by now a blind man could see that Ray is working his way up to asking Nelly out, would Nelly say yes? âWell, Ray, it depends.
