âShit,â I said under my breath, landing in another room of darkness. I coughed out a chest full of dust that had come crashing down with us.
âYe can say that again.â It was Macâs voice that returned in the blind stillness that surrounded us. The floor felt solid, but then so had the one I slid from. I pressed flat palms on the ground around me, groping for a sign of anything, including my sword. My fingers fumbled for an object other than dirt. Did I still have the dagger?
I took in a deep breath, rising to a standing position carefully. A faint light began to glow in the corner of the room, reflecting the same rough stone covered walls Mac and I had just left.
I glanced behind me to see his image in the hint of light that illuminated the space. No one else was present. Where are the others? My eyes shifted to every corner seeking an exit or opening before scanning the ground. Spotting my sword a short distance away, I retrieved it in a couple of steps.
âAre you all right?â I asked, extending a hand to help Mac up. He nodded in reply. âWhat do you make of this?â
He shrugged his shoulders. âWell, the Druids would not make it easy to get to them, aye? I canât sense anything in here. But I do know Iâll need to meet the keepers of the key with ye. I believe the watchers are leading us there.â He stood and brushed a hand over his pants, causing a small cloud of dust to lift into the air. The fall had left a fine powder of gray across his hair as well.
âIâm not worried,â I said, and wondered for a moment if that were indeed true, not seeing any of the rest of the team. âAs prepared as you are with knowledge of this mission, it couldnât prepare you for what we would actually come in contact with.â I found his sword and handed it to him.
âNow,â he said, looking left then right, âI donât suppose thereâs a door leading out of this room?â
âIâll check over here.â I turned in the direction of the dim white â blue light that hung in mid air, like a mysterious ball of magic. Mac proceeded to the opposite side of the room, calling out first to Kevin, then Matt. I pressed my ear to the thick, rough wall, hoping to hear any sound that might lead us to the others. Instead, a loud âwhoooaaaâ settled around us. The wind whistled through the cave, as though an ancient and enormous sarcophagus had been opened, releasing age-old spirits among us.
âSomethingâs coming,â called Mac above the noise. He lifted his sword a bit higher. I gripped mine tighter and stood beside him. My ears began ringing as the sound grew louder and more intense. I battled against the desire to hold my sword ready or sheath it to protect my ears. I settled for wincing at the ear-piercing noise, as if that might help reduce its effects.
