The pull to go to him grew with every second that passed, and still, Jasper fought it. His hatred kept him strong when it became too much. There had been plenty of times he’d found himself just outside the barrier to the mansion, seconds from crossing.

Jasper had wandered the territory for a few days seeing just how the place was run. He didn’t know what he expected, but a thriving territory even under the news that the council was murdered certainly wasn’t it.

“Here you are,” the waiter said, passing over the bill.

Jasper took it and glanced up at the man. “You aren’t afraid now that the council has been taken out?”

The Edoli’s eyes went wide, but he shook his head. “Our king is powerful, and it was clear that the council did not care for this territory. Before our king, we were diminishing. Barely able to survive out here.”

Jasper’s jaw hurt as he ground his teeth.

“In fact, most of us are happy they did nothing for us. We were without a ruler for so long.”

Jasper relaxed his jaw. The waiter was much more forthcoming than some other Edoli he’d run into. He was conscious of those around him as he asked his next question.

“And the king before?”

“Ah, he was...” The Edoli’s brow dipped as his head tilted to the side. “Unusual.”

Jasper figured he knew what kind of king they’d had; it hadn’t been one for the people.

The Edoli shook his head. “Sorry, I don’t remember much about him. I wasn’t born then, but my grandfather described him a few times. You know the old-time stories we grow up with. People love to talk about the old ways.”

Jasper couldn’t muster up the fake laughter he needed to give the man. Instead, he nodded in agreement, although he could care less.

“Anyway, it’s been years since we’ve had a proper king. Titos came around, and there was a lot of backlash. No one knew him, and after years of living the same way, people were afraid he’d be worse.” The waiter shrugged. “But he was far better than any of us predicted.”

“Tony, table three needs bread,” someone shouted.

The waiter smiled at Jasper.

“I have to go, but if you’re one of the refugees, don’t worry. You will get to meet the king and his keepers soon. I heard there will be a huge welcome party.”

Jasper kept his face impassive, not giving away his shock. Refugees and a welcome party? What kind of rulers involved themselves so deeply with their subjects? Better yet, what kind of soul eater was he?

“Thank you,” Jasper said, standing up and leaving a generous tip behind. The Edoli had given him plenty of information.

He stepped out and returned to the motel he was staying at. It was a ways from the mansion, but even with the distance, it did nothing to dull the pull. Jasper ground his teeth. He would break a tooth if he kept it up.

“How much longer are you going to watch me?” Jasper asked as his hand touched the knob.
