Pam Hanley had listened to the descriptions of how Elizabeth had come to her death, and she couldn’t hold her tongue any longer. As she sat there in the front row, not all that far the man she knew in her heart had killed her special friend, Pam began to look for an opportunity. At the next recess, an opening appeared. When Wolff left the defense table, Pam leaned forward and caught Rick’s reluctant eye. With deep anger turning her voice razor-sharp, she glared into his face and spat out, “We’re not finished with you. Rot in hell.”
Rick turned his head abruptly. But his sister heard Pam’s verbal assault and immediately informed Wolff. When court resumed, he went before the judge to complain about Pam’s “threatening comments to my client.” He wanted the judge to eject Pam from courtroom, especially since she might be a witness at trial later. And he wanted the judge to admonish everyone that no such threats or outbursts would be tolerated. Ever a classy person, Wolff did not want the judge to address the comments directly to Pam in front of everyone else. The judge decided not to order Pam removed, but he agreed to warn everyone in the gallery.
“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s been brought to my attention that there have been comments made by a certain person or persons in the gallery, directed toward one of the defendants in this case. I wish to make it extremely clear to anybody in the audience that no such comments will be tolerated, and you are hereby ordered not to make any such comments to either of the defendants sitting in the courtroom here. So, thank you very much.”
The warning did not embarrass Pam in the least. In fact, she was pleased that she had bothered Rick enough to make an issue of it. After all, she wasn’t there to make Rick happy; she was there to ensure that Elizabeth got justice. Knowing that she had made him squirm gave her great satisfaction, although she did vow not to cause any more problems.
And then Tim Braun called his last witness-Doug Meyer, the man who had seen Danny Basile and Rick DeCaro together at the horse farm four days before the murder, had seen a stack of twenty-dollar bills and a pistol in Danny’s hands, and then had seen Danny in that garage with the chopped-up Blazer. But before Meyer told his story, Braun had him run through that almost hopelessly convoluted web that connected the major players in this story. Meyer explained that he and Basile had the same biological mother; she had given up custody of Meyer when he was just five, and he was raised by a foster mother, R’Neil Wells-who had later married Craig’s father, Harold Wells. That was what had drawn Danny, Doug, and Craig together as “brothers.”
Doug Meyer described Danny’s recent lifestyle: living with Wells; working at the horse farm in exchange for the rent-free house and trying to rehab the house
