James met Jessica at the front door of her aunt’s house. Up and down the street were Halloween and autumn decorations. Pumpkins, scarecrows, corn stalks and beautiful baskets of deep colored mums were scattered around the yards. Aunt Florence’s house had no decorations of any kind. This was true for all holidays.

“Your aunt is sound asleep on the leather couch in her office,” James said as Jessica walked to the front door. “She invited me in and was halfway civil to me but she became tired and didn’t want to talk anymore. She said I could see myself out. This place is a marble mansion, cold and sterile. Let’s grab some Chinese.”

“My aunt is not a happy woman,” Jessica answered. “Instead of counting her blessings, she looks at everything negatively. Let me go inside and see if she’s awake so I can at least say hello.”

Jessica tiptoed down the long hallway to the office. The thick wood paneled walls were covered in expensive paintings. An oriental carpet of the finest quality wool lay on the oak floors. Her aunt was sound asleep snoring on the burgundy leather sofa, her head resting on a thick bed pillow. She raised an eyebrow as Jessica walked into the room.

“Hello Jessica, I’m too tired to visit. Have a nice evening.” Almost immediately, she was snoring again and Jessica left.

She walked to the front door and met James. “I’ll meet you at the Chinese restaurant. I have to run a few errands. Are you stopping anywhere or going right over?”

“I’m going over now honey. I’m starved and I need some Moo Goo Gai Pan desperately. See you there.”
