Miss Jane Bennet's arrival at Pemberley was met with equal measures of skepticism and excitement. Elizabeth was, of course, thrilled to welcome her sister to Derbyshire, and Charles seemed to have taken an interest in the young woman even before she arrived.

Caroline and Louisa, predictably, were irritated with the mere notion that another young woman was coming to Pemberley.

Caroline saw everything as competition, whether it was for my attention or the attention of anyone else in the house. That woman would never be satisfied. I pitied the man who might one day make her a wife.

It would not be me.

Jane Bennet was just as lovely as her sister, though the two of them could not have been more different in temperament.

Where Elizabeth was bright and quick to laugh, Jane was more reserved and seemed to prefer to watch and observe than to participate. Elizabeth's dark hair curled playfully around her ears and across her forehead, while Jane's fair hair was straight and well-kept and never escaped from her fastidious coiffure.

Clearly the elder in her demeanor, Jane Bennet was also a sweet young lady with a smile for everyone, and she did not seem to notice how vicious Caroline or Louisa were trying to be in their conversation.

A brilliant tactic, perhaps? Or was she simply too sweet to notice. I resolved to ask that question of Elizabeth when I was able to speak with her, but now that her sister was at Pemberley, the inevitability of her departure loomed over me.

Had I squandered my opportunity to speak to her in private?
