It had been a good day, she’d said. She’d enjoyed it, she’d said. Ben couldn’t help smiling to himself when he thought about it. It had been a good day. He’d liked spending it with her.

Better yet, he’d be seeing her tomorrow too.

But as good as today had been, the best part was still to come. It was the part of his day he looked forward to the most. As he walked through the door to his apartment and called, “I’m home,” Quinn came running out of her playroom and threw herself into his arms. He spun her around until she laughed and then he hugged her again. “Hey, baby. Did you have a good day?”

She nodded, then wiggled to get down. “Come,” she signed, and in case he hadn’t understood, she took his hand and dragged him into the playroom, where she showed him a Lego princess castle.

He waved to Ellie before he went down on his knees to check out her creation. “Wow,” he said. “Did you make this?”

Pride shone on her pretty face as she nodded.

“Great job, Quinn. This is beautiful.”

She nodded again and then ran to her worktable and grabbed a painting she’d done. Stick figures, a man—wearing a stick figure tie, he assumed—and a little girl with long yellow hair.

She nodded and pointed to the picture, to a scribbled wad of black next to the little girl.

“What’s that?” he asked. It obviously meant something to her, but he had no idea. He glanced at Ellie, but she shrugged. “Is that a ball?” It looked like a ball.

Quinn’s face scrunched up. Okay. Not a ball.

“A cookie?”

She rolled her eyes...which was pretty darn cute.

“Sorry, Quinn. I don’t know what that is.” It was one of the frustrations of having a nonverbal child and it was aggravating.

She made a sign—pinching her thumb and forefinger together next to her cheek and drawing it out. Dang. He’d seen that sign before, but he couldn’t remember what it was. That was another frustration, learning sign when he didn’t know it well enough to remember. And then it hit him. The sign mimicked cat whiskers. He should remember that. “Is it a cat?” he asked and Quinn’s smile exploded. Yes. A cat. Of course it was. “A black-and-white cat...” It suddenly hit him. Pearl’s cat had been black-and-white. “Is that Pepe?”

Her smile lit up her face and she nodded wildly.

“What a great painting, Quinn. Good job! Hey, are you ready to have dinner?”

Her nod was adamant.

“Good. I’m starving.” He sent Ellie home and then sat down with Quinn to look at the menu. Even though it was a vast selection, tonight everything looked a little boring. He’d studied this same menu every night for years.

In the end, they ordered pizza and salad, and he even got Quinn to eat some veggies, which was always good. After dinner, she splashed around in the bathtub for a bit, and he got her in jammies and
