Sherry stood at the bottom of the stairs holding her keys, purse, and a duffle bag with a change of clothes for Wyatt. âWyatt, we are going to be late, let's go!â
âComing, Mom!â
Mac stepped up on the porch. âThe van is all loaded,â
âThank you, I donât know what I would do without you.â
âLetâs hope you never have to find out.â He gave her a charming grin. âDo you need me to go get him?â
âI canât imagine what he is doing up there.â
Mac stepped just inside the door, âWyatt buddy, do you need a hand?â
Wyatt magically appeared at the top of the stairs. âIâm ready!â
âDo I even want to know what was taking you so long?â
âNo.â Wyatt said matter-of-factly and headed for the van.
âHow long did you say this stage lasts?â
Mac looked thoughtful, made a show of counting and then declared, âInto his twenties if you're lucky and some guys never outgrow it.â
âTerrific!â she said, locking the door behind them.
Mac climbed behind the wheel of the van, and Sherry slid into the passenger seat. It felt strange sitting on this side of her own van.
âWhy canât we take Mr. McIntyreâs car? It is cooler than this van.â
âFor two reasons. The first, we have way too much stuff to take with us and so the van is roomier. And second, Mr. McIntyre doesnât want his car to smell like sweaty soccer players when this is all over.â
Wyatt leaned back and looked out the window, giving his best surly pout.
âAre you kidding me?â Mac said to no one in particular. âThese vans are hard to find these days. Iâd have one if I could get one at a reasonable price, but any of them on the market that run cost an arm and a leg.â
Wyattâs interest was piqued, âWhy would anyone want one of these old vans?â
âOh.â Mac pretended he didnât realize Wyatt was listening, âWell, you see they are one of the last few vans on the road before they changed everything over to those crossover vehicles and SUVâs. Now donât get me wrong those SUVâs look sleek and everything but youâve got no room. It is very hard to throw a decent party out the back of one of those new models. No headroom for us tall guys either.â
Mac checked the rearview mirror. Wyatt was considering Macâs words. âAnd itâs amazing what some people can do with these things. There is an entire website about people converting these into mini-RVâs and they live in them full-time or use them for serious road trips. I mean, can you imagine going fishing or hiking and having a place to come back and lay down and rest or an actual bathroom, instead of some tree with poison ivy?â
Wyatt laughed, âI suppose.â He twisted in his seat, sizing up the van. Sherry could only imagine what he was envisioning for her humble minivan with its sliding side door and paint peeling off the roof and hood.
âIâd paint the inside black with green rope lights and have personalized tags that said âgamerâ.
