Chapter 16

Leah walked in from the garage to find Matt sitting at the island in the kitchen. A plate of food was in front of him, but he wasn’t eating. He was staring at it. The atmosphere was not the woosah moment she was used to whenever he was in the room. She knew immediately something was wrong.

“Hey.”

Matt looked up at her and immediately knew she had been crying. What he was dealing with was going to have to wait. Leah needed his undivided attention. That was more important than his problem of feeling like his brother was paying him off for being a brother. He stood, walked over to the door then pulled her into his arms. “What happened?”

“Nothing that your arms can’t heal.”

Matt smiled, kissed her temple then held her at arm’s length. “I think both of us need a nice burned hot dog on the grill with a cold beer.”

“Sounds good,” Leah nodded. “I’ll sauté some peppers and onions for the dogs. You start the grill.”

Thirty minutes later they were in the backyard, in their favorite lounge chairs with dressed grilled dogs, chips, a nice salad and a six pack of cold beer. Leah was sharing details about her visit with her grandfather.

“He literally told you he beat your father.”

“Literally,” She nodded as she bit into her hot dog. “All in all, his rant explained why my father is so mean to me. The boys are like a piece of gold and girls are a like a lump of coal to be kept in the dark and only dug up when needed.”

“It explains a lot, however, it is no excuse for your father to behave the way that he does.” Matt took a swig of his beer. “If it was me, I would want to make sure my children did not suffer the same cruelty. With that said, now that you have a better understanding of his reasons, you should have a talk with him before the wedding.”

“Why?” She frowned.

“It may open a door for you to, at the very least, invite him.” Matt suggested.

“That man has not given me any reason to think he is changing his ways towards me. He was mean when I was a child and still is today.”

“But you and Carter are breaking the mold. Neither of you have mean streaks.”

“Oh, they are there,” Leah smirked. “It’s not our leading characteristic, but we can pull it out when needed.”

Matt stared at her. “Going on two years and I’ve only seen you slightly irritated.”

She smiled up at him. “With you in my life, I haven’t had a reason to lash out. Even today, I knew you were going to make things all right.” She leaned over and kissed him then sat back. “So, what happened at the family council?”

Matt sat back, looked away then took a swig of his beer. “I think I received an offer I can’t refuse.”

Leah laughed, then raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess. Godfather Luke?”

Matt nodded. “Luke.”

“When are you going to stop fighting him? He loves his big brother.
