for a trade-in. I was commuting from Arlington, Virginia, and putting a lot of miles on it until I made enough money and felt secure enough to move back into the District. I made that move in July, after my half-year lease was up.
I moved into an apartment complex in the Adams Morgan area right off of the famous Rock Creek Park and near the Washington National Zoo. It was a very convenient location. Rock Creek Park pretty much connected me to the rest of the city, and it was fun to drive through if you liked dangerous curves. Rock Creek Park was like a giant snake.
Things were looking up for me again, but every time it looked good before, something went wrong. I was half expecting my life to go wrong again after a while.
When it didn’t, I just kept on rolling.
I still hadn’t had any serious relationships since Mona. I was preoccupied with survival during my limbo years, so I didn’t have much time to think about women.

I needed to stop blaming things on her and move on with my life. Pearl surely wasn’t thinking about me.
I was substituting as host for Brother Abu at least two times a week and sometimes three. Then he had me interview a sister from Ohio who was a romance writer. I didn’t know it at the time, but she was also trying to break into the radio business.
“This is Bobby Dallas, your host on the show called ‘The Awakenings,’ on WUCI, The International Station. Our guest today is a sister from Akron, Ohio, romance writer Kathy Teals.
“How are you doing today, sister?”
Kathy said, “Let me see, my feet are hurting, I have jet lag from flying back out here from Oakland, California, I’m hungry, and I could use a massage from a man with big hands.”
I was skeptical of her. She struck me as a Tammy Richards type, recklessly out for self. She had the physical frame of a female bodybuilder with short-cut hair and 181
