16 Dunbar’s Tip
“Maybe. No. I don’t know, but there’s something up with Rikki. I saw her talking to these guys who pulled up in front of Frank’s house minutes after she reported trouble. Feds, if I had to guess—FBI or Homeland Security because they wore suits and the car they drove was too snazzy to be DEA or AFT. I took a few pictures on my cellphone. I had the dash cam running, too. If you want to retrieve it, be my guest.”
“Where’s your car?” Peter asked. “And the phone.”
“I’ve got the phone on me. The car’s in a lot where I store my RV. When I heard the B.O.L.O. sent out to find me, I got rid of the car. I borrowed a pickup truck that my friend leaves in the lot. The chatty neighbor fingered me for the break-in at Frank’s house, didn’t she? She went on and on about how close you are to Frank. That’s when I decided maybe I had another way out if he’d given you the goods instead of leaving them in his safe for Rikki to find.”
“Wrong again, dude!” Brien added.
“Like I believe you, dude. Not that any of you would tell me if those pages were here.”
“Whatever,” Brien said, shrugging. “As far as I can tell, you’re out of options with the good cops and the bad cops.” Ellison shut up and eyed us all once more.
“If you’re not IED, are you going turn me in?”
“Why shouldn’t we?” I asked.
“If you do that, I’m dead. You might as well hand me over to IED.” Kim had come back. She’d gone to grab one of the photos pinned to the corkboard in Dad’s office.
“Is this the man you saw with Frank and Harry Mik this morning?”
“That’s him. If Harry Mik doesn’t finish me off, he can do the job, don’t you think?”
Peter motioned for me to step away, so we could speak in private. Well, not in private since our entourage followed, but we were out of earshot from Ellison.
“Maybe we ought to hang onto him for a while longer,” Peter suggested. “Let see if he’s telling us the truth about the suits who paid Rikki a visit before we arrived at Frank’s house.”
“It could be in our interest, and Frank’s, to keep him alive if it’s true that IED is after him. That’s giving him the benefit of the doubt that there is such a thing. We could turn him over to George Hernandez, but that’ll put George in a bad spot, and he won’t be able to keep him long without filing charges. Once he does that, both the good cops and the bad cops will know where Ellison is,” Jerry added. I nodded as Kim weighed in.
“Hanging onto him will give us a chance to ask him more questions depending on what we learn after we check him out. His phone should tell us where he was when he called his office this morning. Let’s see when he last
