THE DAYS DRAG BY, sleepy, unchanging. Lazy desire to stay on the bed, sprawled on the warm wool, watching the smoke rise from a cigarette—to stay here for hours, days. The midday sun crushes the beach. In the corridors, in the rooms that face the blinding sea, striped awnings cast a sickly half-light like exotic undergrowth—a day of insomnia when white bathrobes glide around.

I stayed at my window for a long time last night, watching the secretive moon rise over the sea. Caught in an amorous encounter like that beneath the great ladder of light, covered in smooth, black blisters and so very silent, it looked almost shameless, strange, full of omens like a woman’s malaise.

I’m getting as anxious as a child.
