Chapter 8

I had so many thoughts running through my head as we drove to our destination. I decided to keep my gun laying across my lap for most of the ride. I didn't want to have to reach into my pocket to pull it out if there was trouble. The music played so low you could barely hear it, as if he was giving me an opportunity to strike up a conversation with him. The dark blue seats in the car were stained with ashes and the faint smell of marijuana perfumed the interior. Chris stared straight ahead, barely glancing in any other direction as we rode.

"So now you fucking with Rory too? I guess you'll do anything for money huh?" I said as I stared out of the passenger window.

"He's cool, that's all," he replied.

"Strap is cool, Rory is cool, Bully is cool! Damn! Tell me who's not cool! Is the nigga that killed JL cool? Everybody is just cool!" I said with sarcasm.

"Everything isn't black and white all the time man. You’re a fool if you think it is," he replied.

"That's it? That's all you have to say about it?" I replied with disgust.

"I don't have to say nothing homie!" Chris said angrily. I wanted to smack him in the face with my gun. I was so angry that I debated it.

No matter how hard I tried to convince myself, I couldn't stop believing Chris set us up. The evidence against him was too much to ignore. After everything we'd been through growing up, and as of late, I couldn't understand how he could be so comfortable around them. I realized it was foolish of me to get into this car alone with Chris knowing he could be leading me into a trap. I think subconsciously I wanted there to be a trap, because I wanted a reason to shoot Chris. I couldn't just shoot him and get out of the car, because I wasn't a cold-blooded murderer. But in defense of my life, I believed I could do so easily. The closer we got to Edgewood, the more I mentally prepared myself for anything that might happen. I looked at my cell phone and noticed Vice left a voicemail after his last call.

The further we drove into the west side of the city, the more I noticed the city change. From the make of the cars to the buildings, everything seemed to get better the further we moved away from the Crown. The tension was so thick inside the car, it was obvious it was the last place either one of us wanted to be. Chris began to slow down and then pulled into the drive thru at Burger King. He ordered a large drink then pulled to the pay window without asking me if I wanted anything. As I stared out of the passenger window, I saw Bully's yellow Charger cruise by. I turned to see Chris's reaction, but he conveniently wasn't paying any attention. We turned out into traffic going the same direction as Bully's car.
