Tripp stepped out of a hot shower, his muscles already starting to ache. It had been a long time since heâd helped bale hay and mend fences, but a couple of his ranch hands had fallen ill, and theyâd been shorthanded that day. Heâd rediscovered a few muscles heâd apparently been missing in his weekly workouts. Experience told him the following day would be much worse.
Tripp shrugged on a pair of his favorite broken-in jeans, tugged on a black T-shirt and headed down the hall to check on Dee. The entire house smelled of savory beef stew, and he was starving. Hopefully, Dee was ready to eat, too.
The door was partially open, but Tripp knocked anyway, startling Dee. She was modeling the clothing heâd had sent over from Morgan Grandinâs shop, The Rancherâs Daughter.
âTripp!â Dee whipped around. âWhat are you, part cat? I didnât realize you were home.â
The look on her face reminded him of when Tessa had gotten busted wearing half of their motherâs makeup when she was about five. He reined in a grin.
âI got here about a half an hour ago. It was a tough day. I needed a long hot shower.â Tripp leaned against the door, taking her in. Dee was wearing those jeans that looked like theyâd been tailored to her body with its mesmerizing curves, one of the rodeo shirts and the boots sheâd fallen in love with at the store. He rubbed his chin and nodded approvingly. âYou look amazing in that outfit, and it fits perfectly.â
âYou really think so?â She faced the mirror again, giving him a prize view of her...assets.
Donât even think about it.
He repeated the words in his head, but Dee was all heâd been able to think about for the past week. More so since heâd had the genius idea to invite her to stay at The Noble Spur.
âSweetheart, I have eyes,â he said. The term of endearment had slipped out without thought.
Dee seemed surprised by it but didnât object. Her gaze met his, reflected in the mirror. She cleared her throat and turned to face him. âThank you for this incredibly thoughtful gift, Tripp.â She gestured toward the open box sitting on the trunk at the foot of the bed. âBut I canât accept it.â
âWhy not?â Tripp kept his voice neutral. âIâve gifted you things before.â
âThis isnât a bouquet of flowers or lunch at the diner, Tripp. Itâs an entire freaking wardrobe.â She glanced down at the clothing she was wearing, seemingly frustrated that he didnât seem to understand the difference between the two.
He did. Didnât mean he wouldnât downplay it anyway.
âYou needed some ranch gear. Itâs a few pairs of pants and a few shirts. Not a big deal,â Tripp said.
âYes, but everything here was pretty pricey. Those boots alone cost nearly six hundred dollars.â She extended her leg, showing off the vibrant turquoise sole of her boot. When he didnât respond, she crossed the room and stood a few feet in front of him, her soft spring scent filling his nostrils.
