âWhat!â The file of papers was now on Alexiâs lap, but so was Cosmo. There wasnât room for both and it was clear Cosmo had no intention of budging. âWhat did you read about Anton? You only glanced at the papers for a moment.â
âIâll buy you dinner and you can read it for yourself.â
âYou donât have to do that.â
âItâs the least I can do if youâre giving me free board.â
âIs that what Iâm doing?â Alexi had been wondering when the subject of his living arrangements would come up. âGood to know.â
âWell, I suppose I kinda assumed⦠but, if itâs not convenient Iâm sure Fay wouldââ
âYou can have my spare room, Jack, but it would have been nice if youâd asked instead of just taking me for granted.â
âHas it occurred to you that I didnât ask earlier in case you said no?â He sent her a supplicating smile that threatened her resistance. âI figured that if I left it until it was dark and cold outside, youâd take pity on me.â
âIâd be half convinced, but for the fact that the insecurity act doesnât jibe with the Jack I know and find so infuriating.â
He chuckled. âAh, but you love me anyway.â
âDonât push your luck, Maddox.â
âIâm housetrained.â
âSpeaking of which, weâd best eat at home. For some obscure reason, Cosmo isnât welcome at most of the eateries around these parts.â
âI know a place halfway between here and Newbury that does takeaway.â He turned the car in that direction. âWonât take five minutes to get there.â
âAfraid to sample my cooking?â
âI didnât think you could cook.â
âItâs been a case of having to learn since I moved here. As you just pointed out, takeaways and home deliveries are few and far between. I can manage pasta and⦠well, okay Iâll âfess up, Marks and Sparks idiot-proof ready meals.â
Jack laughed. âGlad youâre not a completely reformed character. I like you fine just the way you are.â
âHold the compliments, Maddox.â Alexi warded him off with a raised hand. âIâve already said you can have the spare room.â
âThatâll do.â He removed one hand from the wheel and placed it on hers. âTo start with.â
âDonât pressure me, Jack. You just hit me with this relationship stuff yesterday and weâve had a few other things to think about since then.â
âYouâre right and Iâm sorry.â
âYou mentioned Fay just now,â Alexi said to alleviate the loaded silence.
âHowâs she doing?â
âBetter than I thought possible,â Alexi replied, referring to Natalie Parkerâs adoptive mother who had inherited Natalieâs cottage. When she discovered her husband had been responsible for Natalie running away as a girl, Fay had left him, moved to Lambourn and took over Natalieâs floristry business. She seemed to find solace in surrounding herself with her murdered daughterâs possessions. âShe designed the landscaping around the annexe at Hopgood Hall and has settled well into local life. I see her once a week. She insists on cooking for me and then giving me enough leftovers to last Cosmo and me for another two days.â
âAh, so you exaggerated these new cooking skills of yours.
