Another feature of the restructuring of Britain’s labour market was its distinct regional patterning. Many of the new service sector jobs were in the south, but industrial jobs were dominant in the north of England and the Celtic periphery. As can be seen in Figure 5.9, the result was an increasing north–south divide in unemployment rates that lasted for nearly two decades.
