We reach the lobby, panting. Luka, Pavel, and the other guards follow. But now it’s a home game, because four grown men in matching black suits is a very odd sight in today’s society. Especially in a hotel lobby. They get plenty of stares. People must think they’re a boy band. I go to the front desk.

“Excuse me,” I say. A girl named Kit helms the front desk. She gives us the up-and-down.

“We’re in room one-two-three, and it seems we are getting harassed by those gentlemen over there.” I theatrically point at the Backstreet Comrades. They see this and turn their backs.

“What seems to be the problem?” Ms. Kit is skeptical.

“Well, they claim they are members of the Westboro Baptist Church, and they keep following us and asking if we would like to be saved.”

“Oh, I see.” Ms. Kit now senses the gravity of the situation. When Luka and his boys see her pick up the phone, they return the way they came. “Let me call security.”

“Thank you,” Ted says. “So how long have you been working here?”

I grab his elbow and fast-walk out of the lobby.

Our skin is damp from the run, and the crisp Cambridge air bites. We book it down Garden Street and past the graveyard until we are back in Harvard Square. I’ve never been more grateful for all five fingers. I feel like crying, and Ted is already crying.
