Chapter Nine
âI think the first thing Iâll do is burn some of these old videos from high school.â Christina tossed a DVD case to the side that had been decorated with pictures from her teen years, including many with her face pressed next to Evanâs.
âHe doesnât strike me as someone youâd be with.â Harrison muttered as he thumbed through a stack of papers to avoid looking at the pictures any more than he had to.
âHow do you know who I would want to be with? I donât even know myself that well.â Christina wanted to tell him that for a few days she thought he was a good idea, but she had clearly been wrong about that. That kind of statement would involve admitting she cared enough to get hurt by him, and it was much too soon for a confession that big.
Plus, it would just be rude of her now that she had control of her feelings. When he held her hand earlier in the day to support her in front of Evan, she was certain they had something that was worth fighting for, but afterwards, when she tried to thank him, he walked past her like she was invisible to him. He was hard to read, and it was getting exhausting.
Harrison shrugged. âHe just seems kind of pompous and presumptuous.â
âOh, big words.â She cringed when she heard flirtatious tones in her voice. Apparently, she couldnât contain her feelings around him as well as she thought. âCorrect words though.â
âSo he doesnât have as good of a chance with you as he thinks he does?â
âHe said that to you?â
âNo, but itâs obvious he thinks thereâs a possibility, even if he canât seem to say more than five words without being mean.â
Christina sighed and sat down. Evan dredged up a lot of repulsive memories and feelings, and as much as she wanted to avoid him, Harrison was willing to listen. She took a deep breath and crumpled her face. âI guess since we didnât have a big, messy breakup, Evan has always thought there was hope of getting back together, but after I got out of Pine Brook and came back, I saw it didnât matter how pretty his eyes were, there wasnât enough behind them to sustain a relationship.â
âOuch, harsh.â
âYouâve met him. Was it untrue?â She raised her eyebrows.
Harrison laughed. âNo, it was more than true.â
âSometimes I wish we wouldâve had a big blowout or a messy fight that led to us both hating each other. Instead, over the last few years, his desperation has turned into this creepy vibe.â She shuddered and Harrison clenched his fists to keep from reaching out and comforting her until the sour expression on her face softened.
He cleared his throat instead. âHave you heard from Tim yet? He should be back from the store by now.â
Christina checked her phone and scowled. âHe stopped at his friendâs house after he went to the store and said heâs trapped by an icy street.â
âHowâd that happen?â Harrison peeked out the window into the darkness surrounding the house.
