Chapter 6
âWell, that was a wasted effort,â Megan said, totally deflated when the walk had yielded nothing more than frozen hands and feet. It didnât bode well for the dog.
âLetâs get inside the car and warm up while we cruise the neighborhood.â
He cranked up the heat after starting the car and drove slowly up and down the outer streets of Meganâs subdivision. The entire time, they took turns calling out the window. The air was so still and cold and their voices had to carry for miles. After an hour of searching streets farther away with no results, Kevin headed back to her house. It seemed the only way Buddy wasnât coming home was because he couldnât, which meant he lay under some bush frozen to death.
Kevin stopped in front of her brick house that was now covered in ice. Tears streamed down Meganâs cheeks as she realized the truth. âThereâs no way Buddy wouldnât come to our calls.â
His resigned gaze met hers and more tears burst free.
When he pulled her close, she didnât hesitate to lean into his support. âIâm offering one last prayer,â she whispered, unable to give up hope. Kevin nodded and grabbed her hand, and both bowed their heads. âPlease, God,â she said, praying as hard as she could. âDonât take him away. Ryan needs him. I still need him.â
âAmen,â Kevin added solemnly.
She turned to him and clarity struck. Megan was no longer alone in her loss. Kevin was right beside her and she could feel his love. If God chose to take the dog away, she and Ryan could bear it as long as he was there to help them. Smiling, she sent up a silent prayer of thanks, remembering to count her blessings.
âIâll be damned,â Kevin said, drawing her out of her thoughts. She glanced at him and his nod indicated the front of the car. When she looked out, she blinked, unable to believe what was in front of her. In the headlightsâ glare, Buddy was walking down the middle of the road, heading slowly toward them.
Kevin got out of the car and the dog stopped, as if confused.
âCome here, Buddy,â he said, patting his thighs. With his tail tucked between his legs and his head down, that Iâve-done-something-wrong posture, Buddy inched forward as Kevin urged, âItâs okay. No oneâs mad at you. Youâre all right.â
Buddy reacted to the soothing tone, walking a little faster. Then, as if his confusion cleared and he realized who they were, his gait quickly went to a trot and his tail started wagging furiously.
Megan and Kevin ran the last few feet. Both petted him, the dog prancing with joy.
âHeâs got to be freezing,â Kevin said.
She nodded and they headed for the house. By this point it was a little after two a.m. and Buddy had been out in the elements for over seven hours; he had to be freezing. âLetâs get him inside.â
Inside, she flipped on lights and turned the heat up. A cursory examination of Buddy yielded nothing drastic, not even frostbite.
