Fifty-one hours after Olivia had handed off her cell phone to Annabelle, found the two of them seated at opposite ends of the innkeeperâs kitchen table, dozens of decorated sugar cookies on sheets of waxed paper spread before them. Annabelle dipped an index finger in a nearly empty bowl of icing and popped the digit into her mouth. âWell, thatâs the lot of them,â she said. âBetween the three batches we made the other night, Iâd say weâre well-stocked. Time for wine.â
âUgh, I donât care if I never see another sugar cookie,â Olivia said. âWine sounds good, though.â
âHa!â Annabelle gained her legs, crossed to the kitchen counter, and proceeded to uncork a bottle of white. âPinot okay with you?â
âPerfect.â Olivia gathered up the bowls of frosting and carried them to the sink.
âJust put them in the dishwasher,â Annabelle instructed. âIâll store the cookies in containers once the icingâs set.
âYes, maâam.â Olivia did as she was told and then sat back down at the table. âDo you know, yours were the first Christmas cookies I ever decorated?â
âNo!â Annabelle placed a wineglass before her and proceeded to fill it.
âUh-huh. Mom wasnât much for holiday baking, but we always had a beautiful tree.â
âEvery familyâs different.â Annabelle poured herself a glass of wine and then set the bottle at the end of the table.
âHereâs to you.â Olivia raised her glass in a toast. âYou saved me.â
âHardly.â Annabelle pulled a chair across from Oliviaâs. âBut right back at you, dear.â Annabelle clinked glasses with Olivia. âItâs been wonderful having you here.â She patted Oliviaâs hand. âYouâre like the daughter I never had.â
âAnd youâre like the mother I always wished for.â
âA compliment, indeed.â In the next instant, Annabelle seemed to grow pensive. âSo, as someone who cares for you, and doesnât mean to meddleâ¦would you mind if I speak frankly?â
âOf course not.â
Annabelle set her glass down and paused, gathering her thoughts. Then she looked hard at Olivia, âPlease donât take offense.â
âDefinitely will not.â Oliviaâs brows knit up, nonetheless.
âI realize youâve been through a lot, that your faith in men has been shaken.â
Olivia nodded. âTrue.â
âGiven my own unfortunate history, my man troubles, so to speak, I believe Iâm uniquely suited to offer advice.â
âGo for it. God knows Iâm in a quandary.â
âOkay, here it is: Donât let a bad experience sour you on the male species.â
âUh-oh!â Olivia took a sip of her wine. âYouâre on to me.â
âIâm dead serious.â Annabelle looked away, momentarily lost in another time. Then she turned back to Olivia. âIf you do, you might fail to recognize the very best thing to have ever come your way.â
âLance?â
âPrecisely. Livy, I understand how you might feel that nowâs not the right time to be embarking on another relationship.â Olivia nodded, and Annabelle continued. âBut I want you to think about something. Will you humor me?â
âAnnabelle, I would do anything for you. What is it?â
âHow was it that you landed in the Crawford hayfield?â
âA momentary lapse in concentration,â Olivia said. âIf you must know, Iâd flipped down the visor to take a quick peek at my shiner.
