Chapter Ten

“I’m sorry.” Sully looked down at his mug and then up at Q. The man’s dark blue eyes hadn’t left him since he’d got out of Latham’s office. “Not an auspicious start to our relationship.”

“Relationships aren’t only about the good times or the sexy times,” Q said quietly. “I’d be a piss-poor partner if I ran off at the first sign of trouble.”

“Yeah, and I know you wouldn’t do that.” Sully’s head was a mess. He knew how important being focused on the job was; especially in SWAT. One moment’s inattention could be dangerous for everyone concerned. He thought back over his last engagement. Yes, he’d been thinking about Q, but not while he was at the scene. In fact, he’d made a point of not thinking about the delicious looking man. The more Sully thought about his actions the surer he was he didn’t put a foot wrong. “It’s a real mess. I don’t know how much you heard, but I didn’t fuck up on the job. I didn’t.”

“It’s okay.” Q reached out and covered his hand; Sully’s shoulders slumped; something a small part of his brain registered as weird. After spending years hiding who he was; to be essentially holding hands with another man at a local diner, three blocks from the precinct, Sully found he didn’t care. He hadn’t seduced Q because he wanted to scratch an itch. He wasn’t going to ignore his new partner in public.

“I don’t know what to do,” Sully confessed. “If I quit now then….”

“Your coworkers will assume you’re running scared.” Q nodded and then sat back as the waitress came with their meals. Her eyes widened as she took in Q’s huge frame and their joined hands.

“Thank you for your service,” she said to Q, putting their plates on the table.

“How did you know my friend’s in the armed forces?” Sully figured in his plain clothes Q could pass for anything from an assassin to a biker, especially with his tattoos on full display.

“Boy, I bet your man screams Marine when he’s naked,” the waitress winked. “Enjoy your meal.”

Sully chuckled as the waitress walked away. The splash of color on Q’s cheeks made him look younger, but he didn’t say a word, simply picking up his knife and fork and enjoying the food while it was hot.

Quit or stay; quit or stay. No matter how much he weighed things up, Sully couldn’t think of a way to keep his reputation, his mate, and his job. The logical thing would be to quit. He had Q now; they could build a life together once Q signed his papers. If it hadn’t been for Gibson’s comments the day before, and Latham’s earlier, he’d have written the letter already.

“What do you know about ranching?” Q asked, placing his knife and fork neatly on his plate and then pushing them aside.

“Er…nothing. I can ride a horse, but I’ve lived in cities all my life,” Sully was so caught up in the merry-go-round in his head he almost missed the question.
