Chapter Six

Oliver

"Oliver," Grant growls, staring at me through bleary eyes. The sun is barely up, but this is important. It doesn't look like he slept much better than I did last night. Lucy finally fell asleep a little after midnight, but I couldn't. Until this is resolved and she's happy again, I won't rest. I can't.

"We need to talk," I say, leaning up against the porch railing of the guesthouse.

Grant sighs and steps outside, allowing the door to close behind him. "Figured you'd be here sooner," he says, crossing his arms. He leans back against the door, cocking his head to the side. "How's she doing?"

"She's devastated."

He flinches.

"She thinks you hate her."

He grits his teeth, the muscle in his jaw ticking.

"For what it's worth, we should have told you," I say. "It's on me that we didn't. I regret like hell that you found out the way you did. But if you're pissed about the baby, I need you to get over it. Your daughter needs you to get over it."

"You should have told me," he says, his voice soft.

"I know," I say because he's right. "She was worried this exact thing would happen if we told you, so I agreed to wait until after the wedding. She's got enough on her plate right now. Clearly, that was the wrong thing to do because the shit happened anyway."

"I could never hate her. She's my daughter, my baby girl."

"I know that. Hell, she knows it too, but she's Lily's daughter too," I remind him. "You know damn well how big her heart is and how fiercely she loves. Her whole life, she's looked up to you, tried to please you. Now, she thinks she disappointed you. She feels guilty. You need to fix it. I don't care how you fix it but fix it. She won't be okay until you do."

He eyes me levelly, his expression inscrutable. I don't really care what he thinks of me or my demands though. When it comes to his daughter, I'll do whatever I have to do to make her happy. He doesn't have to like it. Hell, he doesn't even have to like me. But he will not make her choose between us or try to stop this wedding. I don't care if he is her father. I won't allow him to break her heart to spare his own.

If he's half the man I think he is---and I respect the hell out of him—he won't allow it either. She loves him like she does because he's a good man and a hell of a father. I have a hell of a father myself, but I didn't really understand what that meant until two pink lines appeared on a fragile white stick two weeks ago. I get it now. Being a father doesn't mean showing up or making rules. It means protecting your child above all things. It means worrying about them every fucking minute of the day. It means breaking your own heart to spare theirs even a second of pain.
